How Long Does It Take to Paint a House Exterior?

If you’re a homeowner or business owner in the Santa Rosa area thinking about refreshing your property’s exterior, one of the first questions you’ll probably ask is: “How long is this going to take?” It’s a fair question — especially if you’re running a business and can’t afford downtime, or you’re a homeowner trying to plan around your schedule.

The honest answer? It depends on a few important factors. But in this guide, we’ll walk you through a realistic timeline, what affects the duration, and how to make the whole process go as smoothly as possible.

The Short Answer: 3 to 7 Days for Most Properties

For a typical single-family home or mid-size commercial building, exterior painting usually takes 3 to 7 days from start to finish. That includes surface prep, priming, painting, and final cleanup.

But that’s just the range. A small 1,200 sq. ft. home might be done in 2–3 days, while a large commercial property or multi-story building could take a week or more. Let’s break down exactly what impacts that timeline.

Key Factors That Affect Exterior Painting Time

1. Size of the Property

This is the biggest factor. Square footage directly determines how much surface area needs to be cleaned, prepped, primed, and painted.

  • Small homes (under 1,500 sq. ft.): 2–3 days
  • Medium homes (1,500–2,500 sq. ft.): 3–5 days
  • Large homes or commercial buildings (2,500+ sq. ft.): 5–7+ days

Multi-story buildings take additional time because ladders or scaffolding must be set up and repositioned carefully. Safety cannot be rushed — especially on taller structures or homes on hillsides, which are fairly common in Sonoma County.

2. Surface Condition and Prep Work

Prep work is where many homeowners underestimate the time. If a surface is in poor condition — peeling paint, wood rot, mildew, cracks in stucco — painters need to address all of that before a single drop of new paint goes on.

Here’s why this matters: skipping prep leads to paint that peels within a year or two. Proper surface preparation is what makes a paint job last 7–10 years or more.

Common prep tasks that add time:

  • Pressure washing to remove dirt, mold, and chalking
  • Scraping and sanding peeling or flaking areas
  • Spot-priming bare wood or patched surfaces
  • Repairing damaged siding, trim, or stucco
  • Caulking gaps around windows, doors, and trim

In some cases, prep work alone can take 1–2 full days on a larger property. Don’t cut corners here — the prep is where the durability of your paint job is actually built.

3. Weather Conditions in Northern California

Exterior painting in Santa Rosa is highly weather-dependent. Paint needs to be applied in dry conditions, with temperatures ideally between 50°F and 90°F. High humidity, rain, or intense heat can all cause problems — from poor adhesion to bubbling and uneven drying.

The best painting windows in the North Bay area are typically spring through early fall, when the weather is drier and more predictable. If rain is in the forecast, professional painters will adjust their schedule accordingly. Rushing through a paint job in bad conditions means the paint won’t bond properly and you’ll be redoing it much sooner than expected.

4. Number of Coats and Paint Color Changes

Most quality exterior paint jobs require two coats. If you’re making a dramatic color change — say, going from a dark navy to a light beige — you may need an additional coat to get even coverage, which adds another day or more.

The type of paint also matters. Higher-quality paints often provide better coverage and longer drying times, which can actually save time overall. Cheap paint may require more coats to look right.

5. Crew Size and Experience

A professional crew of 4–6 experienced painters works dramatically faster than a two-person team or a DIYer. Beyond just speed, an experienced crew knows how to work efficiently — staging equipment properly, keeping wet edges, and avoiding lap marks or missed spots.

This is one reason why hiring a professional painting company is almost always faster than the DIY route, even if you’re handy. What might take a homeowner three weekends can typically be completed by a professional crew in 3–5 days.

A Realistic Day-by-Day Timeline

Here’s what a typical exterior painting project might look like from start to finish:

Day 1 — Site Prep

  • Cover landscaping, outdoor furniture, and walkways with drop cloths and plastic sheeting
  • Remove light fixtures, shutters, house numbers, and other hardware
  • Pressure wash the entire exterior to remove dirt, mildew, and old chalking
  • Allow surfaces to fully dry

Day 2–3 — Repairs and Priming

  • Scrape and sand all peeling or flaking paint
  • Patch any cracks in stucco or siding
  • Replace damaged boards or trim where needed
  • Apply caulk around windows, doors, and joints
  • Prime bare wood, patched areas, or the full exterior if needed

Day 3–5 — Painting

  • Apply first coat of exterior paint to all surfaces
  • Allow full drying time (typically 4–24 hours depending on paint type and weather)
  • Apply second coat for complete, durable coverage

Day 5–7 — Touch-Ups and Cleanup

  • Inspect all surfaces for thin spots, drips, or missed areas
  • Complete any touch-up work
  • Reinstall hardware, shutters, and fixtures
  • Remove all protective coverings and clean up the worksite

What About Commercial Buildings?

Commercial exterior painting follows the same general process, but the timeline is often longer due to larger surface areas, taller structures, and the need to work around business hours.

Many commercial clients in Santa Rosa need painting work completed with minimal disruption to their operations — which sometimes means evening or weekend scheduling. A good commercial exterior painting contractor will work around your business schedule to minimize downtime.

For warehouses, retail plazas, office buildings, and apartment complexes, planning for a 1–2 week window is realistic, especially if the building is large or the surfaces require significant prep.

How to Speed Up the Process Without Sacrificing Quality

Want the job done faster? Here are some practical tips that don’t involve cutting corners:

Hire a larger crew. More skilled hands means faster coverage. Ask your contractor how many painters will be on-site each day.

Schedule smart. Book your project during a dry stretch of weather. In Santa Rosa, late spring and summer are generally the most reliable windows.

Prepare before they arrive. Move outdoor furniture, potted plants, and vehicles away from the building. Trim back any shrubs or trees that are growing against the exterior walls. This saves prep time on Day 1.

Choose quality paint. Higher-quality exterior paints often cover in fewer coats and adhere better, which can reduce the overall timeline while also making the finish last longer.

Communicate clearly upfront. Tell your contractor exactly what you need — color changes, specific surfaces, any areas of concern. A clear scope from the beginning avoids delays mid-project.

DIY vs. Hiring a Professional Painter

Let’s be real: painting your own home exterior is a huge undertaking. Beyond the physical labor, there’s equipment to rent (pressure washer, scaffolding, sprayers), prep work that’s easy to underestimate, and the very real risk of an uneven or premature-failing finish if the process isn’t followed correctly.

A professional crew can typically complete in 3–5 days what might take a homeowner 3–4 weekends — and the professional result will almost always last longer.

If you’re trying to weigh the costs, it’s worth checking out our breakdown of what a painting contractor charges per hour to understand what goes into professional painting pricing. The investment in professional work usually pays for itself in longevity and quality.

How Santa Rosa’s Climate Affects Paint Longevity

One thing that often gets overlooked: the local climate directly affects how long your exterior paint will last. Santa Rosa and Sonoma County experience warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. That seasonal moisture swing can be tough on exterior paint that wasn’t applied correctly or with the right products.

UV exposure during the long California summers also causes fading and chalking over time. This is why choosing the right exterior paint formulation — and applying it properly — makes such a significant difference. Quality exterior paint in this region, properly applied, should hold up for 7–10 years before needing a refresh.

I am very happy with my experience with Diamond Painting for my exterior project. The price was very reasonable compared with the other quotes I got. Michael scheduled me as soon as the weather permitted, and the crew (about 5 guys daily) was committed until the job was done. They showed up together every morning by 8am, and were very thorough, finding every last inch of dry rot needing replacement. The end product looks fabulous - I'm so glad I got this done!

The summary is, hire Diamond! We did and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Diamond repainted the exterior of our ~3000 sq ft. hillside house.

Michael and his crew are the complete package, both in terms of customer experience and execution (getting it done and doing a good job).

We hired them at the recommendation of our neighbor who had a good experience with Diamond repainting the exterior of their house.

Michael gave us a reasonable quote, in a timely manner. He turned up when promised and communicated well. He was happy to work with us to make the entire job a success; we asked for extra scaffolding and 2-3 weeks lead time with the scaffolding to allow our contractor to use it to replace 1/3 of our siding.

He was very reasonable about the cost of extra work - we even paid him a little bit more than he asked because it felt right. I think a reasonable contractor is important because once you start the work and you're locked into the contractor, you want to know that changes will be easy.

Michael's crew were respectful, responsive and a pleasure to have around too. They worked carefully.

Last, but not least, we're really happy with the quality of the work.

So, again, just hire Diamond. You won't regret it, and we want to make sure they stay in business so we can use them again. :-)

If you are looking for professional quality paint job, polite painters and awesome price, don’t look further. Diamond painting does a great job and with service. I hired them for wall painting and accent walls and Rob did a great job. After the job was done there was a small area that still was showing prior paint due to sample testing that we did and he patiently came over again and repainted the area. They are great professionals and I’m sure you will be happy with them

As a project manager, it's extremely important that I find tradesmen who are extremely skilled at what they do while also being great team players who are flexible, friendly and great communicators. Well, I found that at this company. Every single person I interacted with on their team from the owner -- Michael-- to the painters, were all extremely helpful, honest, and kind humans -- something I don't take for granted working in an tough industry. And anytime I reached out to the owner with a question, I always got a response quickly. This may sound trivial, but communication in the industry is infamously terrible, so to find someone who prioritizes being in sync and keeping in touch on the million little things is incredibly valuable.

We had a large project for them to complete on a short timeline. We needed the interior and exterior of a residential building completely re-painted, and it was no small task. They worked with me through thick and thin with kindness, humanity, and effort, and that speaks louder to me than almost anything else these days. They went out of their way to help me in multiple ways, and I am forever grateful and indebted to them.

I highly recommend Diamond Painting to anyone looking for quality work, honesty in talking through options, excellent communication, and friendly wholesome people. Thank you Michael, Freddy, Miguel, Zach, and the countless others who also contributed to the project!
