When California began placing tighter restrictions on traditional high-VOC oil-based paints, I was skeptical about the products that would replace them. My skepticism wasn’t baseless. Traditional oil-based paint had real advantages that were difficult to argue with. It flowed and leveled beautifully. Applied correctly, it dried with very few visible brush marks or roller lines. Sprayed finishes could look almost flawless. The cured surface was hard and washable, holding up to years of daily use in a way that earlier water-based paints simply couldn’t match.
I honestly did not believe a water-based product would ever duplicate that appearance or provide the same level of durability. That opinion has changed completely — and the product category that changed it is modern waterborne urethane enamel.
Why Oil-Based Paint Dominated Cabinet Work for So Long
To understand why the shift to urethane paints matters, it helps to understand what made traditional oil-based enamels so dominant in the first place.
The Leveling Advantage
Oil-based paints have a longer open time — meaning the wet paint stays workable longer before it starts to set. This extended open time allows the paint to flow out and self-level before it dries, which is why oil-based finishes could achieve that smooth, almost glassy appearance that painters and homeowners prized.
Water-based paints, by contrast, dry significantly faster. In earlier formulations, this meant brush marks and roller stipple had less time to flow out before the paint set — leaving visible texture in the finished surface. On flat walls, this was rarely a problem. On cabinetry, where smooth finishes are the expectation, it was a real limitation.

Oil-based enamels cure to an exceptionally hard surface. Early water-based paints produced softer, less resistant films. They were easier to scratch, more prone to chipping at door edges, and sometimes showed water marks or cleaning product damage. For professional painters who cared about callbacks and long-term results, these were serious concerns.
The Yellowing Problem (Oil-Based Paint’s Biggest Weakness)
Oil-based enamels had one significant weakness that became more apparent over time: yellowing. The alkyd resins that gave oil-based paints their hardness and leveling properties are inherently prone to yellowing as they age, particularly in areas that don’t receive much natural light.
White and off-white cabinets — the most popular colors in American kitchens — would gradually take on a yellow or cream cast that had nothing to do with dirt or staining. The paint itself was changing color. This is a problem that modern urethane formulations have largely solved.
The Regulatory Shift That Forced the Industry to Adapt
California’s Air Resources Board (CARB) has been progressively tightening VOC limits on architectural coatings for decades. Traditional oil-based alkyd enamels contain high concentrations of volatile organic compounds — the solvents that give these paints their characteristic smell and that evaporate into the air as the paint dries and cures.
As VOC limits tightened, high-VOC oil-based enamels became increasingly restricted for use in California. Products like Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel and Benjamin Moore Advance — both waterborne alkyd urethane hybrids — level remarkably well compared to standard water-based paints. When these products are applied using the correct techniques and equipment, the finished surface can be genuinely smooth, with minimal visible brush marks or spray texture.
Color Retention Without Yellowing
Because modern urethane enamels don’t rely on the same alkyd resin chemistry as traditional oil-based paints, they don’t yellow in the same way. White and light-colored cabinets painted with a quality urethane enamel will retain their original color far better over time — a significant practical advantage for homeowners who want their white kitchen to stay white.

On a properly sprayed cabinet door, the finish can look almost like glass. The smooth, consistent sheen reads as factory-quality to most homeowners and even to many industry professionals. This is a result that simply wasn’t achievable with water-based products 10–15 years ago.
The critical qualifier is “applied correctly.” These products don’t automatically produce a great finish — they require proper technique, equipment, and preparation to realize their full potential. In the wrong hands or with inadequate prep, even the best product will fall short.
Durability in High-Use Environments

One underappreciated advantage of modern urethane enamels over traditional oil-based products is the practical difference they make for homeowners during and after the project.
Odor is dramatically reduced. Oil-based enamels produce strong solvent fumes that require extensive ventilation and make the home unpleasant to occupy during and for days after the project. Modern waterborne urethane enamels have a much milder odor — still present when wet, but nothing like the sharp chemical smell of solvent-based products.
Cleanup is easier, using soap and water rather than mineral spirits or paint thinner — which also means less solvent waste to dispose of.
Curing is more practical. While full cure still takes 2–4 weeks with urethane enamels, the paint is dry to touch and light use is possible much sooner than with oil-based products that required extended cure times before the cabinets could be put back into regular service.

Step 1: Assessment and Planning
Every project begins with a thorough evaluation of the existing cabinets — material type, existing finish condition, hardware, and any damage or wear that needs to be addressed before painting begins. This assessment determines which primer and topcoat products are appropriate and what prep work will be needed.
Step 2: Removal and Labeling
Every cabinet door, drawer front, and piece of hardware is removed and carefully labeled. Our numbering system ensures every piece returns to its original location during reassembly. This step is non-negotiable — painting doors in place prevents proper coverage on edges and profiles and makes it impossible to achieve a consistent finish.
Step 3: Cleaning and Degreasing
All surfaces are thoroughly cleaned with a degreasing agent to remove cooking grease, oils, and residue that accumulates on kitchen cabinets over years of use. This step is especially critical near the stove and range area, where grease buildup can be significant even on surfaces that look clean to the eye. Painting over contaminated surfaces is one of the most common causes of premature cabinet finish failure.
Step 4: Sanding and Surface Preparation
All surfaces are scuff-sanded to create mechanical adhesion — breaking the gloss of the existing finish so the primer has a surface it can grip. On raised-panel doors and ornate profiles, this requires detail sanding with folded sandpaper or sanding sponges to reach all recessed areas. High-gloss unsanded areas in profiles and corners are exactly where paint tends to delaminate first if this step is shortcut.
Step 5: Repairs
Minor dents, cracks, small holes from previous hardware, and surface imperfections are filled with appropriate wood filler or spot putty, sanded smooth once dry, and blended into the surrounding surface. Any wood softened or damaged by moisture — common near the sink area — is addressed at this stage.
Step 6: Primer Application
The appropriate bonding or stain-blocking primer is applied to all surfaces. On previously finished cabinets — especially those with factory-applied lacquer or slick thermofoil surfaces — a bonding primer with strong adhesion characteristics is selected specifically for the substrate. After priming, surfaces are sanded again with fine-grit paper to knock down any raised grain or dust nibs before the topcoat goes on.
Step 7: Spray Application in a Controlled Environment
Cabinet doors and drawer fronts are sprayed in a controlled environment — either an off-site spray booth or a properly set up on-site spray area. Controlled conditions eliminate airborne dust contamination and allow the painter to work efficiently with consistent results. Cabinet boxes are finished on-site with careful preparation and masking of surrounding surfaces.
Step 8: Multiple Finish Coats
A minimum of two finish coats of premium waterborne urethane enamel are applied, with light sanding and a thorough wipe-down between coats. This inter-coat sanding is what produces the smooth, factory-quality finish — each coat is leveled before the next is applied.
Step 9: Reassembly and Final Inspection
After adequate drying time, all doors and drawer fronts are reinstalled, hinges are adjusted for proper alignment, and new hardware is installed if the client has chosen to upgrade. The entire project is inspected and any thin spots or touch-up areas are addressed before the work area is cleaned and the kitchen is returned to service.

Choosing the Right Product: Not All Urethane Enamels Are Equal
The category of “waterborne urethane enamel” covers a wide range of products, and not all of them perform equally. A few products have established themselves as the professional standard for good reason:
Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel
Arguably the most widely used professional-grade waterborne urethane enamel in the industry. It levels exceptionally well, cures to a very hard film, and is highly washable once fully cured. It’s available in any color from Sherwin-Williams’ extensive line and applies well both by spray and brush-and-roll. This is one of our primary topcoat products for cabinet refinishing.
Benjamin Moore Advance
A waterborne alkyd urethane hybrid that produces a particularly smooth finish. It has a longer open time than some competing products, which contributes to its excellent leveling characteristics. Benjamin Moore Advance is specified by many high-end painting contractors specifically because of the quality of the finished surface it produces.
Sherwin-Williams ProClassic Alkyd Interior Enamel
An oil-modified waterborne enamel that behaves more like a traditional oil-based product in terms of open time and leveling while still offering lower VOC content and water cleanup. A strong option for contractors coming from an oil-based background who want familiar application characteristics with reduced solvent content.
Conversion Varnish (Professional Spray Systems)
For contractors with professional spray booths and finishing equipment, conversion varnish represents the highest level of cabinet finish performance. It produces an extremely hard, chemically resistant surface that is virtually identical to a factory-applied finish. It requires specialized application knowledge and equipment, but for clients who want the absolute best possible result, it’s worth considering.
What This Means If You’re Considering Cabinet Refinishing
If you had kitchen cabinets refinished years ago with an earlier generation of water-based products and were disappointed with the results — finish that chipped at the edges, yellowed differently than expected, or didn’t hold up to cleaning — it’s worth knowing that the products available today are genuinely different.
